A story for older children, young adults, or anyone who enjoys original fantasy

by Nigel Osner

Henry Prince, a nervous law student, enters a parallel world of legends.

There he is known as a hero called Prince Henry and is expected to live up to his name!

Young Henry Prince is a solitary boy very interested in magic. At school in London he meets a brilliant boy called Rupert Stiltskin, who tells him there is another world where magic exists. On Halloween Henry and Rupert get a first glimpse of Rumpelstiltskin, who visits briefly from that other world. Henry manages to lock away the memory of this incident. He becomes a friendless law student. But one summer Henry encounters Rupert again. Rupert is now a junior spin-doctor for the Chancellor of the Exchequer. What is more, Rupert still seems to believe in this parallel universe, a world of legends, which is viewable through an internet site, for anyone who can work out the password.

On Midsummer’s Eve, the whole situation takes a dramatic turn. The adult Rupert and Rumpelstiltskin are almost identical and they now switch worlds. Rupert becomes a spin-doctor for some of the world of legends’ major villains, who are feeling a bit insecure. The strongest is the Wicked Queen from the legend of Snow White. Meanwhile, in this world Rumpelstiltskin starts spinning gold for the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Henry works out the switch has happened and finds the key to the site, which is linked with the Queen’s magic mirror. He starts to see, and then talk to, some extraordinary characters. He gets a crush on the girl in Rumpelstiltskin’s legend, who will die unless she produces some gold. Henry contacts Rumpelstiltskin, who agrees to give him some gold – on conditions naturally!

Unexpectedly, Henry finds himself transported to the world of legends. There he finds his name is reversed. He is known as Prince Henry and is regarded as a great hero, though nobody knows why. Within hours of his arrival, he is required to fight a very mean old dragon. Henry is scared senseless.

As the story develops, Henry encounters legendary figures from fairy tale, classical mythology – and Walt Disney’s take on Snow White and the seven dwarves! He discovers the truth about the other world. It is the repository of stories formed in ours. It has to be a world of strong emotions, violent acts as well as great joy. It was weakening before Rupert arrived. Rupert’s massaging of some evil reputations has helped to weaken it further. The barrier between the two worlds erodes. More and more inhabitants begin to cross over. Henry has to become a big enough hero to set up a new legend of his own, one strong enough to get both worlds back on course.
